The young detective goes undercover at a match factory and gathers clues that lead her to uncover corruption, corporate greed and an underground labor movement. As they traverse London’s murky streets and smoky factories, their case becomes increasingly complex.
Enola’s mother Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter) offers wise counsel throughout the film that draws upon her own experience as a woman in Victorian London. Although her performance is sparsely used, Helena Bonham Carter’s warm performance still adds an air of warmth and humanity to the story.
Enola’s attraction to Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge) is evident throughout the film. As Tewkesbury progresses from being an irreverent dimwit to London’s most eligible bachelor, so does her interest in him. Their mutual attraction makes Enola’s journey towards independence even more enjoyable.
Though its many shortcomings don’t destroy it, they do add a level of tension that doesn’t quite work in its favor. Pacing is uneven and one cannot ignore the sensitive approach taken with some subjects.
Despite its shortcomings, Brown and Partridge have managed to create an endearing, believable relationship both on and off-set. As a result, viewers are eager to see where this on-screen romance goes in the future.
